Since we are made in His image (Genesis 1:27 KJV), He calls us to follow His example. We forgive for our own sake because unforgiveness will dominate our thoughts, robbing us of the joy God intends for us daily. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV) instructs us:
"Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
When someone wrongs us, our role is to obey Scripture and lean on God for strength to release the pain. Forgiveness is not excusing the offense but choosing to entrust justice to God, knowing He will deal with every person righteously. Romans 12:19 (ESV) reassures us:
"Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’"
As we walk in forgiveness, we align ourselves with God’s plans for our lives. Philippians 2:13 (NIV) promises:
"For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose."
When we choose to forgive, God strengthens us, heals our hearts, and helps us move forward in freedom. We may not always understand why certain hurts come our way, but we can trust that God sees all things and will work everything for our good (Romans 8:28 KJV).
Prayer to Forgive Others:
Daddy God,
I thank You for Your goodness and forgiveness. I recognize that if I want to follow You, I must forgive. You understand the situations leading up to the actions of (name the person) that hurt me, but I choose—by my own free will—to forgive him/her.
I ask You to heal my heart, repair the damage, and set me free from overthinking this situation. I choose to cast their offense into Your sea of forgetfulness (Micah 7:19 KJV). You say, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay” (Romans 12:19 KJV), so I trust You to handle this in Your wisdom. You know who will turn to You in repentance and who will continue in wickedness. I release (name) into Your hands.
Thank You, Daddy God, for loving me and teaching me how to live a joyful, free life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
