Study to Show Yourselves a Workman That Does Not Be Ashamed
Scripture Focus:
"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15, NIV)
As believers, studying God’s Word is not just a suggestion—it is our duty. We are called to be diligent in seeking knowledge, understanding His truths, and equipping ourselves to live faithfully and share the gospel boldly. The Apostle Paul’s instruction to Timothy reminds us that presenting ourselves as approved workers requires effort, discipline, and intentionality. There are no excuses for neglecting this responsibility,
especially when we have been given the tools and access to God’s Word.
The Call to Study
Studying Scripture equips us with the wisdom and discernment we need to navigate life’s challenges. Hosea 4:6 (KJV) warns, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Neglecting the study of God’s Word leaves us vulnerable to deception, confusion, and defeat. However, when we commit to studying Scripture, we grow in faith and confidence, knowing how to correctly apply God’s truth.
Proverbs 4:7 (KJV) tells us, "The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it costs all you have, get understanding." Gaining knowledge requires effort, but the rewards are invaluable. Wisdom and understanding lead to a life lived with purpose and alignment with God’s will.
No Excuses
It is easy to make excuses for not studying the Word: “I’m too busy,” “I don’t know where to start,” or “I’ll get to it later.” But Jesus Himself demonstrated the importance of knowing Scripture. When tempted by the devil in the wilderness, He countered every attack with, "It is written…" (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10 KJV). His knowledge of God’s Word was His weapon against the enemy, and it must be ours too.
Consider Psalm 1:2-3 (KJV), which speaks of the one who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night: "That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers." Delighting in God’s Word requires consistency, focus, and discipline. The result? A fruitful and prosperous life that honors God.
The Power of Preparation
Paul’s exhortation in 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) includes the phrase “approved by God.” This approval comes from a life committed to studying and applying Scripture. It is through diligent study that we are prepared to defend our faith, teach others, and live a life that brings glory to God. As Peter writes in 1 Peter 3:15 (KJV): "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
Being prepared means being rooted in God’s Word. It requires intentional study and meditation, allowing the Holy Spirit to illuminate truth and transform our minds. Romans 12:2 (KJV) reminds us, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will."
Practical Steps to Study
Set a Regular Time: Dedicate a specific time each day to study Scripture. Whether it’s morning, lunchtime, or evening, make it a priority.
Use Study Tools: Utilize resources like study Bibles, commentaries, or devotionals to deepen your understanding of God’s Word.
Pray for Understanding: Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and give you insight as you read.
Meditate on Scripture: Don’t rush through passages. Take time to reflect on what you’ve read and how it applies to your life.
Apply What You Learn: Knowledge is meant to be lived out. Ask yourself how you can put God’s Word into practice each day.
