There are many biblical examples of discernment in action. Solomon could have asked God for anything the world possessed, but he asked for wisdom, knowing that true wisdom would bring everything he could possibly desire.
“So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” — 1 Kings 3:9 (NIV)
Solomon, though young, understood the necessity of discernment and asked God for wisdom. Because of this, he was able to judge rightly and lead Israel well.
Paul also warns us about false teachers:
“For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” — 2 Corinthians 11:13-14 (NIV)
Even in the early church, Paul had to caution believers against those who distorted the gospel. Today, we must be equally aware of teachings that contradict God’s Word.
Jesus Himself gave us an example when He was tempted by the devil in the wilderness.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” — Matthew 4:4 (ESV)
When Satan tempted Jesus, He responded with Scripture, showing us how to use God’s Word as our defense against deception.
There are guidelines to sharpen our discernment. First, we must study God’s Word daily. The more we know the Bible, the easier it is to recognize when something does not align with God’s truth.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
Next, we must pray for wisdom, asking God to increase our ability to see beyond the surface and make decisions that align with His will.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” — James 1:5 (NIV)
We must also allow the Holy Spirit to lead us. Learning to listen and be sensitive to His direction will guide us in every decision.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” — John 14:26 (NIV)
The Holy Spirit will guide us into truth, helping us discern the right path.
Finally, we are to test every spirit and teaching to ensure it aligns with Scripture. Not everything that sounds spiritual is from God. Always measure what you hear against His Word.
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” — 1 John 4:1 (NIV)
A Prayer for Discernment
Heavenly Father, I ask You to sharpen my spiritual discernment. Help me recognize truth from deception and guide me in wisdom. Let me be led by Your Spirit and rooted in Your Word so that I may walk in righteousness and not be led astray. Give me the courage to stand firm in Your truth, even when it is unpopular. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
