Living with Purpose vs. Living for the Moment

It is an image of three stick figures are the bottom of the steps, that says, "You are here." Then once they reach the steps they have to climb a ladder, that states, "Your Goal."

Proverbs 13:4 (ESV): "The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied."

The diligent person sets goals, works consistently, and lives with a clear purpose. They know that success often comes through perseverance and trusting in God's guidance. Here are a few scriptures to guide us into a victorious life.

  • Colossians 3:23 (NIV): "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." God encourages us to work diligently, not just for ourselves, but as a form of service to Him. Our efforts are an act of worship, showing our commitment to excellence. This person doesn’t settle; he or she sets goals, and creates a plan. Sometimes life experiences bring diversions off the path, but a determined individual finds a way back to their path to success.

  • Proverbs 12:24 (NIV): "Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor."
Hard work brings leadership and influence. It reflects a disciplined life, and God honors those who put in the effort. God has created us to be kings, queens, and priests. The devil comes to kill, steal, and destroy. Whenever I see individuals soliciting on a corner, I think of how much they have been robbed of all the good things in life available through knowing God and following His plans.

The diligent person is someone who continually strives to grow, learn, and serve others. They understand that their hard work is not just about worldly rewards but about glorifying God.

In contrast, the lazy person often lacks direction and motivation. They may live for temporary pleasures, avoiding responsibility and the rewards of perseverance. Scriptures dealing with these:

  • Proverbs 6:9-11 (NIV): "How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man."
Laziness leads to a life of missed opportunities and regret. It leaves a person unprepared for the challenges that life brings. We must always be thankful for the opportunities presented and work as unto the Lord - giving Him praise.

  • Ecclesiastes 10:18 (NIV): "Through laziness, the rafters sag; because of idle hands, the house leaks." A life without purpose slowly crumbles. When we avoid responsibilities, things fall apart around us—both physically and spiritually.

Those who live without goals often end up stuck in cycles of unfulfilled desires. Their lives lack the richness that comes from disciplined effort and intentional living. Each day, we have the choice to live diligently, working toward our goals with purpose, or to fall into laziness, chasing momentary pleasures. Let us choose the path of diligence, knowing that God blesses those who seek to do what is right. Galatians 6:9 NIV: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Prayer: Father, keep me from the traps of laziness and aimlessness. Help me to live with purpose, always seeking Your will and direction for my life. Amen. Help me to work diligently in all things, trusting that my efforts will honor You and bear fruit in due time. Amen.I Am
