“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from His.” — Hebrews 4:9-10 (NIV)
God established rest as a divine principle from the beginning. Even He rested on the seventh day, not because He was tired, but as an example for us to follow. Resting in Christ means surrendering control, trusting that He is working on our behalf, and believing that His grace is sufficient for all our needs.
Martha, in the Bible, was anxious and distracted with many tasks, while her sister Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words. Jesus told Martha that Mary had chosen what was better (Luke 10:38-42 KJV). This reminds us that while responsibilities are important, nothing is more valuable than spending time in God’s presence.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
Rest is found in stillness before God, in moments of worship, prayer, and surrender. It is in these moments that He renews our strength, restores our souls, and gives us peace beyond understanding. When we don’t know what to do, we stop, shut out everything around us, and simply listen with our spirits until the rest comes.
When we enter into Christ’s rest, we shift from striving to abiding. We exchange our worries for His promises, our exhaustion for His refreshing, and our anxiety for His peace. No matter what we face, His rest is available to us today.
A Prayer for Rest
Heavenly Father, I come to You, weary and in need of Your rest. Teach me to trust You completely, to lay my burdens at Your feet, and to walk in the peace that You freely give. Help me to be still in Your presence and to find true refreshment in Your love. Thank You for being my refuge and my strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
