The Shield of Faith – Our Divine Defense
Key Scripture:
“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” — Ephesians 6:16-17 NIV.
In the spiritual battle we face every day, God has equipped us with powerful armor to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. Among the pieces of this armor is the shield of faith, a crucial defense designed to protect us from the enemy's relentless attacks.
The Apostle Paul uses the imagery of a Roman soldier’s shield—a large, door-like structure that could cover the soldier’s entire body. This shield was not just for
personal protection; when soldiers stood together, they could form a wall of shields, creating an almost impenetrable barrier against the enemy. This demonstrates how powerful our spiritual defense becomes when we have other Christians stand with us against evil. In the same way, our faith acts as a shield, guarding us against the fiery darts of doubt, fear, temptation, and deception that the devil hurls our way.
What exactly does this shield of faith look like in our lives? Faith is our unwavering trust in God’s character, promises, and power. It’s believing that God is who He says He is, even when circumstances try to convince us otherwise. When the enemy tries to sow seeds of doubt, our faith declares, “I trust in the Lord, no matter what I see or feel.”
Declarations:
We stand against Doubt: When Satan whispers that God has forgotten us, the shield of faith reminds us of God’s promise, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” - Hebrews 13:5.
We stand against Fear: When fear tries to paralyze us, faith recalls God’s word, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” 2 Timothy 1:7.
We stand against Temptation: When temptation lures us, faith helps us stand on the truth, “No temptation has overtaken us except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear” - 1 Corinthians 10:13.
We stand against Deception: When lies attack our mind, faith affirms the truth, “The Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one” 2 Thessalonians 3:3.
