The first four commandments focus on our relationship with Daddy God and how we are to honor Him with our lives. Each of these commandments highlights a key aspect of our faith and devotion. The first commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3, KJV), emphasizes that God desires to be the sole focus of our worship and allegiance. He is the one true God, and our hearts should be fully committed to Him. The second commandment, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image” (Exodus 20:4-5, KJV), warns against idolatry, whether in physical form or anything that takes priority over God in our lives. He calls us to worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24 KJV), rather than through man-made representations. The third commandment, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain” (Exodus 20:7, KJV), reminds us that God’s Name is holy and should be spoken with reverence. This applies not only to swearing but also to how we carry His name as believers—living in a way that honors Him (Colossians 3:17 KJV). The fourth commandment, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8, KJV), serves as a reminder to set aside time to rest and worship, trusting that God is our provider. This commandment invites us into a rhythm of work and rest, allowing us to refresh our souls in His presence (Mark 2:27 KJV).
Jesus reinforced these principles in Matthew 22:37-39 (KJV), when He summarized the Ten Commandments into two great commandments: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.’” The first four commandments guide us in our love for God, while the last six teach us how to love and respect others.
Let’s get to know our Daddy God better through keeping His the very first priority in our daily lives.
