stirred a natural sense of resentment and hurt. He couldn't understand why his father would rejoice over the son who had turned his back on them, while he, who remained faithful, had never received such a celebration.
The elder brother's reaction is relatable. He had given his life to his father’s work, avoided mistakes, and lived honorably. He had not faced the shame, the loss, or the despair of his brother’s journey, which took him to the lowest of lows—eating with pigs just to survive. Friends abandoned the younger brother once his wealth was gone, and he learned the hard truth of worldly relationships built on selfish gain. By contrast, the elder brother remained loyal and faithful, never experiencing the trauma or humiliation his brother endured.
In this story, the father’s response to both sons is a powerful representation of our Heavenly Father’s grace. The father is pleased with the elder brother’s obedience, faithfulness, and steadfastness; he reassures him, saying, "My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours" (Luke 15:31). There was no need to doubt his father’s love and favor. At the same time, the father's rejoicing over the prodigal's return shows his joy in redemption, his delight in the lost being found and brought back to life.
Be encouraged because in our walk with God, we may sometimes feel unnoticed when others who have strayed return and receive a warm welcome. But let us remember that God delights in those who follow His path unwaveringly. "The LORD rewards everyone for their righteousness and faithfulness" (1 Samuel 26:23 KJV). Like the elder brother, our obedience is precious to God, and we are assured of our reward and His constant love.
God rejoices when the lost return to Him. Just as the father in the parable celebrated his younger son’s return, our Heavenly Father celebrates every lost soul that repents. He is a God of mercy, forgiving those who seek His face even after mistakes.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy. Help me to rejoice when the lost are found and to stay grateful for Your love and presence in my life. Give me a heart that reflects Your compassion, even when I do not fully understand it. Remind me daily that I am precious to You as I walk in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration:
I rejoice in God’s grace, both for me and for those who return to Him. I know that I am deeply loved as I walk in faithfulness, and my heart is softened to welcome others back to His love. God, I trust You in all things, knowing You are both merciful and just.
Let this devotional remind us that faithfulness brings us constant peace in God’s love, and His joy knows no bounds when the lost are found. In both, we see the fullness of His heart.
