King Solomon's request for wisdom highlights the profound value of seeking divine understanding. When God offered him anything he desired, Solomon chose wisdom to govern his people effectively. This selfless request pleased the Lord, who granted him unparalleled wisdom, along with riches and honor. Solomon recognized that wisdom was essential not only for effective leadership but also for achieving success and prosperity in all areas of life.
Proverbs 1:7 (KJV) brings more clarity to obtaining wisdom. It states, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." We fear the Lord in the sense that we don’t want to disappoint Him—just like a dear child who wants to please a good, earthly father. People who hate instruction and wisdom are called "fools." The definition of a fool is someone who behaves in a silly way or lacks good judgment. We’ve all met this person—the one who is always seeking “fun,” sometimes at the expense of avoiding work and drawing others into their fruitless schemes.
The Bible warns us about being unteachable. Proverbs 26:12 (AMP) says, "Do you see a man [who is unteachable and] wise in his own eyes and full of self-conceit? There is more hope for a fool than for him." And Proverbs 9:9 (ESV) reminds us, "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning."
Scripture emphasizes the importance of a teachable spirit, highlighting that rejecting instruction can lead to personal downfall and negatively impact those around us. Proverbs 12:1 (NIV) states, "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid." This verse shows that an unteachable attitude not only hinders personal growth but also brings harm to the broader community.
As Christians earnestly seek the Lord for guidance and wisdom, we are often confronted by news reports detailing horrific acts committed against innocent people—including children and infants. We find ourselves asking how anyone could be so cruel. A contributing factor is that these individuals despise instruction and reject guidance, embodying the mindset of, "You're not telling me what to do." This resistance to correction fosters a hardened heart and can lead to actions that hurt others.
James 1:5 (NIV) tells us, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." This verse encourages believers to seek wisdom from God, who gives it freely and without judgment. Daddy God is pleased when it is our earnest desire to walk in wisdom. There are many blessings that result from receiving God’s wisdom.
First, we are blessed with a more secure life. Proverbs 3:13-18 (NIV) describes the blessings and value that come with finding wisdom, comparing it to precious jewels. We also receive honor and favor. Embracing wisdom brings recognition and grace. Proverbs 4:8-9 (NIV) promises that wisdom will exalt and honor those who cherish her. Wisdom serves as a safeguard against life’s challenges. Ecclesiastes 7:12 (NIV) says, "Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it."
Seeking wisdom from the Lord enriches our lives with understanding, guidance, and divine favor. By earnestly pursuing and valuing wisdom, we align ourselves with God’s will and experience the profound benefits that flow from it. If we reject instruction, we will encounter many hardships and failures. So seek wisdom.
