Salt, in biblical times, was valuable. It was used not only to add flavor but also to prevent decay. Likewise, our faith should enhance the lives of those around us, preserving righteousness and drawing others closer to God. However, Jesus warns that if salt loses its flavor, it is useless. This reminds us that if we dilute our faith or hide our beliefs to fit in, we lose our effectiveness in God’s kingdom.
“Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.” — Mark 9:50 (NIV)
Being salt means living in a way that brings purity and integrity into our conversations, relationships, and workplaces. It means standing for truth even when it is unpopular and being a source of encouragement and healing to those around us.
Jesus also calls us to be light. Light is never meant to be hidden but to illuminate and guide. As believers, we carry the light of Christ within us, meant to shine brightly in a world filled with darkness, confusion, and hopelessness.
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16 (NIV)
Our lives should reflect Christ so clearly that others see His love and truth through us. Light does not struggle to push away darkness; it simply shines. In the same way, we do not need to force our faith onto others, but we should live in such a way that our lives point to Jesus. And people are drawn to follow us
The world needs believers who will not compromise their faith but will boldly stand as salt and light. We are called to influence, to make a difference, and to bring hope to those who are lost. Let us not blend in but stand out for God’s glory.
A Prayer to Be Salt and Light
Heavenly Father, help me to be salt and light in this world. Let my words and actions bring glory to You. Keep me from losing my passion for truth, and give me the courage to shine brightly in dark places. Let my life be a testimony of Your goodness and grace. May I reflect Your love and bring others closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
